NextSnow Search national team member, Brian Kish, to demonstrate extreme ski jumping
Farmington, PA (January 27, 2006) – Mystic Mountain at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is the best place to beat the winter chill – and to gear up for the Super Bowl – with WinterFest Weekend 2006. Scheduled for Feb. 3-4, the two-day event features activities for the entire family – from chili cooking contests and ice carving demonstrations to Big Air competitions, “polar bear” golf, and a ski jumping demonstration by local favorite, Brian Kish, who represents Nemacolin Woodlands and Pennsylvania as a member of the Sports Illustrated for Kids NextSnow Search national team.
News Talk 1020 KDKA radio will broadcast live from WinterFest, with special guest Randy Grossman, a former Pittsburgh Steeler and Super Bowl winner.
Events start on Friday, Feb. 3 with live entertainment by Circle of Friends. Saturday kicks off at 11:00 a.m. with the Big Air Competition for youth and adult skiers and snowboarders. The Big Air Competition has no entry fee, but competitors must register beginning at 9:00 a.m. that morning. At noon comes ice carving demonstrations and the Nemacolin Polar Bear Classic, an eight-hole winter golf tournament (scramble format) on the Links course. Open to resort guests and the public, the Nemacolin Polar Bear Classic is $10 per person ($40 per team), and includes golf balls and a lift ticket for skiing Mystic Mountain for the day.
At 1:00 p.m., local teen Brian Kish will showcase his extreme ski jumping skills that landed him a spot on the Sports Illustrated for Kids NextSnow Search national team. Kish represented Mystic Mountain and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort at the national competition in Keystone, Colo., last year – beating more than 100 youth competitors from across the country to secure a spot on the team. Following Kish’s demonstration, things heat up even more with the annual Chili Cook-off from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with Nemacolin’s own chefs and chefs from Peters Torchlite, Braddock Inn, and Caleigh’s competing for the coveted Silver Ladle. Free chili samples will be available during the cook-off.
Also starting at 1:00 p.m. is News Talk 1020 KDKA radio’s live broadcast from the Hitchin’ Post Saloon. KDKA host, Herschel, will host his weekly “Car Radio” show from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., followed by the station’s sports show from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Special guest Randy Grossman – a tight-end for the Super Bowl dominating Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970s – will offer his analysis of Sunday’s championship game.
WinterFest-goers can showcase their creativity with the Ski Dummy Race at 3:00 p.m., with both a Downhill Race and a Big Air Competition just for these not-quite-real skiers. Registration is required and begins at noon, and “ski dummies” must have four limbs and weigh no more than 120 pounds. At 4:00 p.m., Nemacolin’s Kidz Club program will operate a Kidz Corner with special arts and crafts activities. At 8:00 p.m., Nemacolin associates will honor the memory of Timothy Allen Umbel – a young man who worked in the resort’s ski and activities department – with a Torchlight Parade. Rounding out the evening, the Stonee Ridge Band will play at the Hitchin’ Post Saloon from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.
