Press Room- Archived Press Releases: Falling Rock At Nemacolin Woodlands Resort Receives AAA Five Diamond Award

Hotel is one of only 93 honored by American Automobile Association

Farmington, PA (October 31, 2006)
— Falling Rock hotel at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort has received the prestigious Five Diamond Award from the American Automobile Association (AAA) for 2007. A 42-room luxury, boutique hotel, Falling Rock is designed on the architectural principles and style of the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright. According to AAA, only 93 hotels – out of 56,000 evaluated – across the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean achieved Five Diamond status for the coming year.

“Ecstatic does not even begin to describe how we feel about receiving this distinction,” says Trey Matheu, Director of Resort Operations at Nemacolin. “Falling Rock opened in August, 2004 as an entirely new concept for our resort – to further expand the level of luxury accommodation options for our guests. Credit for this award goes both to our owner, Maggie Hardy Magerko, for her vision and to the associates of Nemacolin for bringing an experience and level of service that only a handful of properties achieve.”

Falling Rock makes the fourth hotel in Pennsylvania to achieve Five Diamond status – it is the first outside of Philadelphia and the only in the Pittsburgh region. According to AAA, only one quarter of one percent of properties evaluated achieve Five Diamond distinction, and it is even more rare for a hotel like Falling Rock – which has been open only two years – to be a recipient.

As part of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Falling Rock offers 24-hour butler service for guests and is a study in architecture and design, created as a tribute to famed American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. The hotel sits on the 18th green of the resort’s award-winning Mystic Rock golf course – home to the PGA TOUR 84 Lumber Classic (2003 to 2006) – with balcony and non-balcony rooms. Guests can enjoy cocktails in the Amber Lounge and impressive American cuisine in Aqueous, one of Pittsburgh’s Top 25 Restaurants, as well as all the other amenities and activities available at the 2,800-acre resort, one of Travel + Leisure magazine’s World’s 500 Best Resorts.

AAA first started listing accommodation information in its travel publications in the early 1900s. In 1937, the first field inspectors were hired to inspect hotels, motels, and restaurants, and in 1963, the organization established ratings of good, very good, excellent or outstanding. The Diamond Rating Process was introduced in 1977 and is recognized as the most trusted rating process for North American travelers. To become AAA Approved and Diamond Rated, hotels undergo a thorough inspection by one of AAA’s 65 full-time, highly trained professional evaluators. Inspections are done anonymously, and Five Diamond establishments undergo a series of inspections and a final committee review. Inspections cover eight categories of guest experience including exterior and grounds, public areas, room décor and ambiance, guest room amenities, bathrooms, housekeeping, management, and guest services.
